We’re excited to invite you to the African Studies Group’s September 2025 Seminar
Join us for our upcoming September seminar!
On Wednesday 24th September, Guido Melo will present a fascinating seminar, looking at findings from his masters thesis.
Venue: University of Melbourne, Old Arts Atrium Room 213
Time: 4:00-5:30pm
Guido will share insights on how image-generating AI systems influence public perception. Drawing on student interviews, the research reveals AI’s preference for whiteness, its alteration of Black features, and its damaging portrayal of First Nations people. Technology here doesn’t just replicate inequities; it intensifies them in new digital forms. The findings highlight a dangerous alignment between technological systems and colonial histories. Framed through AI Erasure, the seminar shows how the absence of marginalised communities in data risks becoming their absence in digital futures.
