Celebrating Culture and Connection at the International Fiesta 2025
The African Studies Group (ASG) proudly participated in the vibrant International Fiesta hosted by the Graduate Student Association (GSA) at the University of Melbourne on Friday, 1st August 2025. This annual event brings together students from all corners of the world to celebrate cultural diversity — and ASG was honoured to represent the richness of African heritage once again.
At our cultural stall, we showcased traditional dress styles from across the continent, including Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. We were especially excited that our very own ASG President, Luka, was recognised as one of the best traditionally dressed on the day and received a prize for his outstanding cultural representation.
Visitors to our stall also took part in a fun and educational trivia session about Africa, which included questions about African languages, countries, and flags. One of the most talked-about questions was:
“Which African country has the most pyramids?”
Many participants instinctively answered with a popular choice — but surprisingly, most got it wrong! (We won’t spoil the answer here, just in case you’d like to try your luck next time.)
One of the highlights of the day was the way students connected through language. ASG members engaged with fellow students in English, Arabic, and even Mandarin, showing that culture and language can be powerful bridges.
We’re always looking to connect with anyone who has an interest in Africa, whether you're from the continent or simply curious to learn more. Keep an eye out for our stall at future events, follow us online, and sign up to hear about our seminars, socials, and cultural showcases.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
